A Saturday of intense action ended in great victory for First Merchant Bank (FMB) as they emerged overall champions of the Bankers Sports Day at College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre.
FMB won in several sports disciplines in the event that had 11 banks competing.
FMB triumphed in; volleyball, 100-metresprints and also finished third in football after losing to Ecobank.
FMB Head of Marketing Sylvia Mataka hailed her sports men and women before describing their victory as a great achievement for the bank.
“This is a great achievement for us and it came as a result of team work. As a bank that sponsors various sporting disciplines in the country, we encourage our staff to participate as well.
“We cannot be working all the time. Next year, we will up our game to defend the crown.” Said Mataka, whose bank also emerged overall winner last year.
Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) were crowned Football champions after beating FDH Bank 3-0, while Ecobank were champions in netball. CDH Investments Bank were kings in Basketball.
In individual awards, Robert Harawa of Nedbank emerged as the most valuable player in basketball, while Pempho Khomba was voted the best player in football.
The best netballer award went to Tiwonge Nkhwazi, while Chikondi Kamoto was voted the best player in volleyball.
In the Egg Race, it was Sella Msika, who emerged the winner, while Chimwemwe Median was a hero in Bawo.
In sack race it was Elias Makumba, while in 100 meters race for women, Susan Tengatenga become the first followed by Getrude Chimbweya and Carol Magola.
In the men, 100 meters race, Ipyana Mwakanema emerged the winner followed by Isaac Mlanda and Blessings Kadazi
In her remarks, Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM) Executive Director Lyness Nkungula thanked FMB, Standard Bank, Ecobank, Nedbank, OBM, RBM, NBM, New Finance Bank, FDH Bank, NBS Bank and CDH Investment Bank for taking part in the event aimed at promoting togetherness and interaction among the country’s bankers.
